Man United players’ reaction to Ruud van Nistelrooy speaks volumes after fortunate Leicester win

Manchester United’s players will have breathed a sigh of relief after Harry Maguire’s late goal sparred them and their many fans another 30 minutes of toil at Old Trafford.. It must be noted that the goal should have and would have been disallowed for offside if VAR had been in operation against Leicester City at M16 on Friday night. The Reds got away with one, as they have done on several occasions under Ruben Amorim so far, with fortunate wins over Fulham, Rangers, Southampton and now Leicester among the growing performances of concern.. Amorim, as well as most fans, will be bothered that United cannot put together a convincing performance over 90 minutes. The last one perhaps came in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final game in charge as interim manager, when the Reds beat the team he now manages, Leicester City, 3-0 on November 10.. And the players’ reaction to the club’s former striker speaks volumes about how he was received in the United dressing room during his brief four-game spell in charge of the Reds. Casemiro and Victor Lindelof were pictured in discussion with the Dutchman pre-match whilst United captain Bruno Fernandes was one of several other players to shake hands with him on the pitch at full-time.. That’s not to say that the former PSV Eindhoven boss would have fared better than Amorim. Van Nistelrooy largely benefited from having the short bounce United inevitably received after Erik ten Hag’s sacking and as seen with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a successful spell as interim manager is no guarantee of long-term success.. But perhaps United should have listened to Amorim’s initial request of waiting until the summer. It’s become clear that the ex-Sporting boss needs a clearout, and whilst that may have begun on the January transfer window with Marcus Rashford and Antony among those to leave, it’s not nearly enough.. United’s restrictions with PSR, which limited their ability to make any new additions this winter, should have been the clue Ineos needed to wait until the season ended before bringing in a manager with a vastly different style of play.. It’s hard to believe that Van Nistelrooy wouldn’t have taken the job until the season ended. United had more to play when he left, having been justfour points off third place in the Premier League, and some of that decline should be on Amorim.. And yet, it’s the decision-makers at the Reds who have botched a season that could set United back further. They remain in the FA Cup and Europa League, and winning the latter will secure a spot in the Champions League, but the mood music at Old Trafford indicates that the club is in another crisis entirely of Ineos’ own making..
