Man City spent £180m in January – but signing they made one year ago could prove the biggest bargain

In January, Manchester City made significant investments in player acquisitions, spending nearly £13 million after securing Nico Gonzalez on deadline day, following earlier signings of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis. However, it may be a signing from a year ago that ends up being the most beneficial for Pep Guardiola’s team. Gonzalez and Reis may have their first appearances in this weekend’s FA Cup match against Leyton Orient, while Marmoush and Khusanov have already played for the Blues. Meanwhile, across 5,000 miles in South America, an emerging talent is making a name for himself on the continental circuit before joining City later this month. Claudio Echerverri is making a significant impact at the South America Under-20 Championship, putting Argentina in a strong position to vie for the title. This highly regarded attacking midfielder is set to join the Manchester City first team following the tournament. His transfer to the Etihad for £12.5 million was finalized in January 2024, but the young player was sent back on loan to River Plate for the next year. Echeverri, who has inked a contract lasting until 2028, has generated a lot of enthusiasm among fans with his performances in the Under-20 Championship. He netted two goals during a 6-0 victory against Brazil in the initial group match and has since increased his goal count to aid Argentina’s progression to the final round. In the first match of that stage, he dazzled by assisting Ian Subiabre in a 2-1 triumph over Chile, ranking third in the golden boot standings. Their campaign is ongoing with a game against Uruguay scheduled for Friday. Echeverri participated in last year’s Olympics, and City along with their supporters will likely be pleased with his performances to date. He will join City after completing his commitments with the national team. Although he may still participate in Guardiola’s team this season, allowing him to compete in this tournament highlights that the club still sees him as a player with potential for the future. City did something similar with Maximo Perrone, who was part of Guardiola’s squad for six months after joining from Velez Sarsfeld in January 2023.
