Jose Fonte has revealed the one “dream job” that would likely trump all others for Ruben Amorim.
The Manchester United head coach is currently attempting to steer his side out of the doldrums as they sit 13th in the Premier League table. United have won five of their past seven matches (including a penalty shootout triumph at Arsenal), but the mood at Old Trafford has soured following the 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Fans will be hoping Amorim’s project succeeds in time and that the former Sporting CP coach can lead United for a long time to come. However, former Portugal international and Premier League defender Fonte has raised caution over the one job that could tempt him away.
Speaking to BoyleSports about Premier League Betting, Fonte said: “It’s every manager’s dream to coach their national team, that will be the same for Ruben Amorim. What an incredible experience that is for any coach.
“It also gives you the opportunity to not have to work every day and every session, you have more time with your family and to prepare your plans.
“There is still work to be done in qualification and tournaments, but what an experience to lead your country to a European Championship or a World Cup.”
Ex-West Ham and Southampton centre-half Fonte went on to describe the national team gig as the “biggest honour” for a coach, suggesting Amorim may work his way into the race for the Portugal position. And with Roberto Martinez’s contract due to expire after the 2026 World Cup, the opportunity may arise sooner rather than later.

Fonte is currently playing for Casa Pia, which was also the first club Amorim managed following his retirement in 2017. His coaching career has mostly gone from strength to strength since then, but he has struggled so far in guiding United back anywhere close to where they want to be.
The Red Devils had won three in a row prior to their defeat at home to the Eagles on Sunday. United host Leicester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday, and they then travel to fellow strugglers Tottenham in a crunch Premier League clash on Sunday 16th.
