Jeremy Clarkson has shared his sympathy after a fan revealed he sustained a gruesome thumb injury similar to one the presenter had.

The former Top Gear host, 64, accidentally cut off half of his thumb while making potato crisps in 2021, having to get the digit sewn back on at the hospital.

At the weekend, a fan with the X handle TruckerBren revealed he had “sliced off part of his thumb” using a vegetable slicer.

He posted a photo of his bloodied thumb wrapped in bandages and tagged Clarkson in the post.

“I sliced part of my thumb off on one of the vegetables slicers like Clarkson did…” he wrote.

“I blame Clarkson for inspiring me to grow my own food and eat fresh products from farmers markets,” the user added alongside three laughing face emojis.

The Clarkson’s Farm star was quick to respond: “I feel your pain.”

The broadcaster suffered a similar stomach-churning injury the same year he launched his Amazon Prime series, Clarkson’s Farm, which follows his efforts to run a 1,000 acre farm in the Cotswolds.

He was chopping up potatoes with a mandolin to make chilli-flavoured crisps with his girlfriend Lisa Hogan, 49, for his Diddly Squat Farm Shop.

The incident was aired in an episode of the second series of Clarkson’s Farm.

He was seen remarking, “Can you imagine how easily you could take a fing-” while cutting potatoes, before shrieking, “Ah, f***ing hell!” as part of his thumb was sliced off.

He ran to the sink to wash the blood off his hand, while Hogan expressed her horror at finding the torn-off piece of thumb still left on the slicer.

Clarkson joked in the voiceover: “Since no-one would want to eat thumb-flavoured crisps I was bandaged up and nagged out of the door by Lisa.”

“I cut half of my thumb off, but it’s all been sewn back on again now,” he recalled in an interview after the incident.

“It’s interesting that the only proper injury I’ve sustained in farming – a long-lasting one – was actually from cooking, rather than farming.”

The journalist joked: “Which just goes to show: Gordon Ramsay’s job is more dangerous than mine.”

He added in his Sunday Times column: “The doc explained that I could lose the use of it, and since the opposable thumb is all that separates us from goats, I decided I’d better do as I was told.

“I can’t do up button-flied trousers. I can’t open a door. I can’t sign my name and I can’t even wipe my bottom.”
