Manchester United star experiences dream debut as Man City face nightmare fixture scenario

Manchester United Women and Manchester City Women progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last weekend.. United cruised into the last eight of the competition with a convincing victory over National League North side Wolves, winning 6-0, while City beat Leicester City 3-1 at the Joie Stadium.. As a reward for progressing to the quarter-final stage of the competition, United will host Sunderland and City will lock horns with Aston Villa. The ties will be played next month.. As part of the Manchester Evening News’ weekly women’s football notebook, here is a round-up of the five biggest talking points from the women’s football scene across Manchester from the past week.. United blow Wolves away. After dismantling West Bromwich Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup last month, winning 7-0 at Leigh Sports Village, United made light work of their Midlands rivals at New Bucks Head in Shropshire last Saturday evening, winning 6-0.. No doubt mindful of the headlines that would have been generated had they come unstuck against the Black Country outfit, United put the contest to bed by half-time, taking a 2-0 lead into the interval via goals from Elisabeth Terland and Leah Galton.. Terland scored her second goal in as many games with 26 minutes on the clock, turning home Melvine Malard’s low centre at the back post, before Galton’s right-footed effort from inside the penalty area caught out Wolves goalkeeper Bec Thomas at her near post.. United quickly added to their tally after the break, scoring a third through Aoife Mannion before Ella Toone rifled in a fourth. That marked her sixth goal in her last five matches.. United completed the rout in the closing stages, netting a fifth and a sixth through debutant Mared Griffiths. The 17-year-old had earlier stepped off the bench with 81 minutes played and scored in the 88th and 95th minute.. Mared Griffiths marked her debut with two goals. (Image: Naomi Baker/Getty Images.). City safely through. After seeing their rivals progress to the quarter-finals on Saturday, City followed suit on Sunday, beating Women’s Super League (WSL) counterparts Leicester 3-1.. Gareth Taylor’s side controlled the game from the off and found themselves 2-0 up with less than half an hour on the clock. Leila Ouahabi opened the scoring after 18 minutes after a cross from the right flank was not dealt with by the Leicester defence.. City continued to regularly knock on the Foxes’ door and a second goal arrived on 29 minutes when January signing Kerolin saw a deflected effort from a tight angle loop up over goalkeeper Olivia Clark. Buoyed by her first goal in City colours, the Brazilian went close again before half-time, seeing a low effort from just inside the box saved by Clark.. However, the Blues eventually got the third goal their performance deserved when Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw put a challenging week behind her 14 minutes into the second half. The Jamacian found herself in the right place at the right time to head home Aoba Fujino’s pinpoint cross from the right flank.. However, City were unable to preserve their clean sheet, conceding a late consolation goal on the counter-attack to substitute Nelly Lasova.. Quintet earn England call-ups. England manager Sarina Wiegman named her squad for the Lionesses’ upcoming UEFA Nations League clashes with Portugal and Spain on Wednesday, with the headline decision seeing Chloe Kelly left out. The City winger, who joined Arsenal on loan for the remainder of the season last month, has been omitted from the squad due to a lack of game time this season.. Start playing and show what you’re about, and then we’ll have that conversation again.”. Nevertheless, places in the latest Lionesses squad were reserved for United quartet Maya Le Tissier, Millie Turner, Grace Clinton and Toone. They were joined in the squad by City duo Laura Blindkilde Brown and Jess Park.. Elsewhere, former United attacker Nikita Parris, who is now at Brighton & Hove Albion, earned her first England call-up since November 2022.. Toone scoops monthly awards. Toone was last week named the WSL Player of the Month for January after making an immediate impact following her return from a calf injury that forced her to take up a watching brief for two months.. After making her highly anticipated comeback by stepping off the bench to score in the 7-0 thrashing of West Brom in the FA Cup, she scored a hat-trick against City at the Etihad Stadium the following weekend to help United seal a 4-2 derby day triumph. She also made her mark in United’s 3-0 win over Brighton in their final WSL outing of the month, scoring the opening goal after just two minutes.. It marked the first time she had scooped the WSL Player of the Month award since winning it for the first time back in December 2021. As well as winning the aforementioned accolade, she also won the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month award.. Ella Toone has been in fine form recently. (Image: Manchester United/Manchester United via Getty Images.). She saw off competition from United teammate Terland, Chelsea duo Erin Cuthbert and Sjoeke Nusken, City ace Mary Fowler and Tottenham Hotspur forward Bethany England.. City face nightmare fixture scenario. Prior to their FA Cup win over Leicester at the weekend, City progressed to the final of the League Cup for the first time since 2022 by beating Arsenal 2-1 at Meadow Park last Thursday night. Two goals from Fowler, including a 95th-minute winner, either side of a Mariona Caldentey penalty, saw City through, booking a date with Chelsea on March 15.. As a result, City will now face the Londoners in four consecutive fixtures across three different competitions in a little under a fortnight. The League Cup final will be followed by the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, a WSL meeting and the second leg of their Champions League tie.. The Champions League tie will take place at the Joie Stadium and the WSL fixture will be held at the Etihad Stadium. The return leg of the European tie will take place at Stamford Bridge..
