Manchester United talent is already an international star – and he’s only 18

James Scanlon admitted Manchester United’s youngsters are “buzzing” to reach the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals.. United must be the favourites to lift this season’s Youth Cup after comfortably winning 5-1 against Chelsea on Wednesday night, teeing up a clash with Arsenal in the next round.. Chido Obi-Martin scored a hat-trick at Leigh Sports Village, meaning he has seven goals in the competition, but Scanlon scored a brace and his goals took the game away from Chelsea.. Scanlon’s goals gave United a 3-1 lead at the interval and Obi-Martin scored twice – he also scored the equaliser – when play resumed to net a hat-trick. United’s Under-18 side is stacked with talent and they will be hopeful of extending the club’s rich history in the prestigious competition.. Scanlon has already made his international debut for Gibraltar, who he qualifies to represent through his mother, and he will play a crucial role in the rest of the Youth Cup campaign.. “I’m very happy, it was a great team result and to get two goals myself, I’m delighted,” Scanlon told MUTV.. “It’s obviously a really high level game against Chelsea but it’s the games you want to be involved in as an academy player and I think we rose to the challenge well and, on the night, we were the better team.. “The message was just to back ourselves, we know what we can do when we’re right at it, so to back ourselves and have belief, play the way that we know we can. I’m starting to get a good relationship with Jaydan Kamason down that side and I thanked him on the pitch and in the dressing room.. “It was a very nice pass from him [Kamason]. I was doing to a few of the boys, they didn’t know I had that in me [a headed goal], but it’s good to add different types of goals to my game.. “Everyone is buzzing and it’s a great result. We’re really looking forward to it [playing Arsenal]. The FA Youth Cup has a special feeling obviously with the suits, playing here under the lights.”. Last season, Scanlon contributed eight goals and three assists in 12 appearances for the U18s on their way to league glory and the youngster also made appearances for the Under-21s.. United rewarded Midlands-born Scanlon with his first professional contract at the club in May.
