After a 20-year career playing for Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa, and a brief spell in club management, Southgate made the switch to the England U21s in 2013. He replaced ex-Man City star Stuart Pearce.. But Sam Allardyce’s resignation as the senior team boss in 2016 saw him thrusted to the limelight. He enjoyed plenty of success, however, as well as giving a number of United and Manchester City stars their international debuts; including Phil Foden and Luke Shaw.. In the years preceding his departure from the role last July, Southgate led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the final of Euro 2020 and 2024, as well as a third-place finish in the 2019 UEFA Nations League. All of these experiences and more shaping his new book release.. Southgate explained: “After stepping down as England manager following eight very special years, I’ve been reflecting on what I have lived through and what comes next. Coaching top players and playing against some of the best teams in the world pushed me to operate at the highest level in football.. “Rather than write a memoir of those times I decided to share my experiences in a different way, through the lens of leadership which I hope will provide lessons for anyone who wants to discover their own authentic leadership style.”. Gareth Southgate and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, who is now out on loan at his former club Aston Villa. The book’s title, Dear England, was also the name of the letter Southgate wrote to England fans during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was later used by James Graham for his award-winning play which is set to be turned into a screenplay by the BBC, also earmarked for release in 2025.. Ben Brusey, publishing director at Century, added: “Just as Gareth inspired the nation with his England leadership, every page of his book will inspire readers with his characteristic sense of purpose, honesty, resilience and integrity. This will be a landmark leadership book, which I know will be enjoyed by readers for years to come.”. Dear England: Lessons on Leadership by Gareth Southgate will hit store shelves on October 23. Further details are to be confirmed.
