Love Island star Danny Bibby has revealed his $200,000 supercar exploded into flames while he was driving it.
The 28-year-old – who appeared on the ITV dating show in 2021 – was driving his McLaren 720S, worth around £220,000, when the back of it burst into flames.
Bibby explained that he pulled over, got his fire extinguisher and aimed it at the car seconds before it “exploded in his face”.
The clothing brand owner from Wigan shared horrifying videos on Instagram of the purple car in flames on the side of the road, as well as firemen extinguishing the huge blaze.
“Tell me you’re having a bad day without telling me you’re having a bad day,” he said as he filmed himself in front of the wreckage.
Bibby tried to make light of the situation, adding, “Sound that, mate,” and “F***ing nice one,” while showing fans the burnt-out remnants of his “dream car”.
After getting hundreds of concerned messages from fans, Bibby filmed another video in which he explained what happened.
“I was just driving about 30mph and then next minute the car changed gear and the back end was on fire. I pulled over, ran to the fire extinguisher,” he said.
“As I’m putting the fire extinguisher… the car exploded in my face and basically I just had to sit and watch my dream car just burn to the ground and everyone just sat there and watched it.
“Pretty sad, but… Obviously, it’s a set back. I’m trying to switch it into a positive. I’m trying to see the positive in it but I’m not quite sure what that is yet. But it’s happened for a reason but I don’t know why as yet.”
Fans shared their relief at the TV star’s safety in the comments.
“Wow! You’re so lucky!!!! So sorry to see this though, hope you’re ok!” one wrote.
Another added, “This is awful I’m so sorry this has happened Danny,” and a third posted: “Omg I’d be crying.”
“Thank God you’re okay,” someone else enthused.
Bibby is a former plumber who was in the Love Island villa for around a week before being voted out.
The show received more than 1,500 Ofcom complaints for featuring Bibby after it emerged he had reportedly used the n-word in an Instagram post in 2019, which has since been deleted.
He said in a statement: “I’d like to take the time to apologise to anyone that may have taken offence to my inappropriate remark.
“I never meant anything malicious by this comment at all. I am not a racist person and it’s unacceptable language and ignorant.
“I meant no offence and feel like I have really learnt from my mistakes and will never use that word again. I am a kind loving person and hopefully you get to see that in the show.”
