Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is looking for a new goalkeeper to challenge Andre Onana this season. Onana, 28, has made several notable mistakes since Amorim took charge, despite a strong start to the season amid the team’s declining performance. Amorim aims to bring in a ‘keeper to compete with Onana for the starting position, as Altay Bayindir is not seen as strong enough competition. Bayindir, who signed from Fenerbahce for £4.3 million in September 2023, has only played four matches for the club, all in the FA Cup and League Cup. The Turkish international faced criticism for two significant blunders during United’s 4-3 League Cup quarter-final loss to Tottenham last month. Bayindir was scored on directly from a corner for Son Heung-min’s winning goal. The 26-year-old Bayindir would need to depart this month if United intends to sign a replacement right away. Tom Heaton, the third-choice goalkeeper who will be 39 in April, is set to become a free agent this summer. Amorim thinks he will have the opportunity to bolster the goalkeeping department at United during the summer. This season, Onana has let in 26 goals over 19 Premier League matches and had a particularly poor December, making mistakes against Nottingham Forest, Viktoria Plzen, and Wolves. Arsenal took advantage of his reluctance during corners, netting both goals from corner kicks in their 2-0 win against United. Later, Wolves’ playmaker Matheus Cunha scored straight from a corner against Onana in United’s 2-0 defeat at Molineux. United purchased Onana from Inter Milan for £47.2 million a year after he departed Ajax on a free transfer. The Cameroon international has recorded 20 shutouts in 70 matches.
