Luke Shaw, the Manchester United defender, has unfortunately experienced another obstacle in his recovery from injury. The left-back, who transferred to United from Southampton in 2014, has struggled with fitness problems throughout his time at Old Trafford. His initial significant injury occurred during Shaw’s second season when he sustained a double leg fracture in a match against PSV Eindhoven. While the 29-year-old has experienced times of consistent fitness, his career has been plagued by ongoing injuries. Shaw has participated in just three matches this season but appeared close to making a comeback, possibly contending with the recently signed £25 million wing-back, Patrick Dorgu. The Mirror has indicated that Shaw has encountered a setback in his rehabilitation, prolonging his absence from the team and contributing to his troubling injury record at United. According to Transfermarkt, Shaw has experienced 29 injuries while at United, leading to an incredible total of 343,606 days spent on the injured list. As a result, Shaw has been absent from 221 matches for United, which is almost the same as his total of 278 matches played for the club. During his first season, injuries to his hamstring and ankle kept Shaw out of 15 games. Nevertheless, the most challenging times were still ahead for Shaw, as he suffered a double leg fracture in September 2015 while playing against PSV. This injury kept him out of action until the next August, leading to a total of 51 games missed. Shaw’s injury struggles persisted during Jose Mourinho’s time as manager, where he was absent for 17 matches in the 2016/17 season and concluded that season with a foot injury that sidelined him until November. During Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure, Shaw experienced persistent hamstring problems yet continued to be a consistent starter. His success persisted at the beginning under Erik ten Hag, where he made 47 appearances and renewed his contract in December 2022.
