The Premier League has been forced to release a statement clarifying why Liverpool had a goal ruled out against Manchester City.. Pep Guardiola’s side will have been hoping to bounce back from a disappointing defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League in midweek and build on their 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United in the Premier League the week before.. However, first-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool in a controlling position at the half-time interval, with the Reds good value for their lead.. Curtis Jones thought he’d given Liverpool a 3-0 lead at the Etihad, just before the hour mark, but VAR had to intervene. Hungarian midfielder Szoboszlai was played in behind the City defence before cutting the ball back across to his fellow midfielder, who scored from close range.. The Liverpool academy graduate wheeled away to celebrate, but they were cut short with Anthony Taylor consulting with Stuart Attwell on VAR duty, alongside his assistant Adam Nunn. The latter two officials recommended that the goal be overturned with Szoboszlai offside in the build-up.. A Premier League statement, posted on X, read: “VAR recommended that Liverpool’s goal was disallowed as Szoboszlai was in an offside position in the build-up.”. City did improve in the second-half of the tie but lacked a threat in the final third with Erling Haaland missing the tie after sustaining an injury in that win over Newcastle last weekend.. Article continues below. Defeat to Arne Slot’s side means City miss the opportunity to leapfrog Nottingham Forest and move into third after the Tricky Trees were beaten by the Magpies at St. James’ Park.. It also means Eddie Howe’s side move level on points with City, but Guardiola’s men retain their top-four berth on goal difference.
