Everton defender Jake O’Brien believes his side should have been awarded an ‘obvious’ penalty in injury time against Manchester United.. Two late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte brought the Reds level after being 2-0 down against the Toffees at half-time. United’s late fightback was almost wasted after referee Andrew Madley awarded Everton a penalty in the third minute of injury time.. It looked as though former United player Ashley Young had been pushed in the box by Matthijs de Ligt. VAR sent Madley to the screen for an on-field review, where the ref went against his initial call and changed to no penalty.. Many Toffees fans felt hard done by the decision. Ruben Amorim thought it was soft, but Rio Ferdinand was surprised that the call was overturned, and O’Brien believes his own side were denied a stonewall penalty.. The 23-year-old said: “I think it was a penalty. From what I could see, it looked obvious, it didn’t even look like something you would check, but I think he has made, from what I think, a lot of wrong decisions today.. It would have changed how it went at the end.”. Expanding further on Madley’s performance, O’Brien said: “I think the officiating, I think it wasn’t just the penalty at the end, I think there were a lot of decisions that didn’t go our way today – and on another day, would go our way. Today he made a lot of wrong decisions.”. The draw means neither Everton or Man United move up the table. Amorim’s men remain in 15th and, despite discussions regarding the relegation zone, have a comfortable 13 point buffer to Ipswich in 18th.
