Ruben Amorim will be looking for a positive end to the 2024/2025 season after a disappointing start to life at Manchester United. The 40-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag as United’s new permanent head coach in November and has since won just nine and drawn three of his 21 matches at the helm.. In the Premier League, United have struggled. They sit in 15th position, having picked up just 29 points from their opening 25 games. United have all-but ruled themselves out from getting a European place via the league, unless they can forge together a remarkable run between now and the end of the season.. As for the other competitions, United are out of the Carabao Cup – but they remain in the FA Cup and the Europa League. Although United’s form has been terrible this season, they have a realistic chance of winning both of those and should be looking to target two more trophies before the end of the campaign.. Other than that, there are a number of other priorities that United need to fix in the next couple of months. And with that in mind, The Manchester Evening News have predicted their most realistic outcomes for the rest of the season.. Hojlund rediscovers form. Rasmus Hojlund has flattered to deceive during Amorim’s time in charge of United so far. The Dane has scored just five goals in 20 appearances across all competitions since the Portuguese took charge.. It has been a worrying trend that has seen Hojlund criticised for his performances and lack of scoring threat at the top end of the pitch. There were some calls for United to sign a new No.9 in the January transfer window and drop Hojlund – less than 18 months since his £72million move from Atalanta.. Unlike some underperforming stars, Hojlund has the potential to become a centre forward, there’s no doubt about it. And with time, Amorim can get the best out of the Denmark international.. Come the end of the season, it’s not out the realms of possibility that Hojlund scores ten more goals and cements himself as United’s long-term first-choice striker, eliminating the need for a new one in the summer.. Youngsters offered chance. United’s focus for the rest of the season should be on the Europa League. Although the FA Cup is going to be important to ensure United give themselves the best chance of ending the campaign by picking up a domestic trophy, Europe’s secondary competition offers United qualification for the Champions League.. It means that Amorim should be playing his best XI in the Europa League and FA Cup from now until the end of the season, leaving the Premier League as the least priority competition. United sit 15th in the top-flight, and while they are not safe from relegation just yet, they have little else to play for.. United’s Premier League position is shocking, it’s safe to say, but it could allow some youngsters a massive chance to showcase their qualities. Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi, in particular, may just be given roles and it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if the former Arsenal duo are used a fair bit in the league.. Garnacho and Mainoo futures. Taking matters off the pitch for this end-of-season prediction and United need to ensure the futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo are sorted. Both players were linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January and are expected to gain significant interest in the summer window.. Due to United’s financial concerns, one of Garnacho or Mainoo could be sold to free up finances for players to be signed. At this stage, it’s unclear whether one, if not both, are going to be allowed to leave – even though Amorim admitted last week that United need to sell before they can buy.. What is certain, however, is that United must get their futures resolved – and quickly. Garnacho has three-and-half years left on his contract and has been subject to interest from the likes of Napoli and Chelsea, while Mainoo, who has until 2027 on his current deal, has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich – among others.. By the end of the campaign, it will be made clear whether (or not) Garnacho and Mainoo will be sold. United need to get planning for the future now, and there is a little feeling that United are going to cash in on Garnacho – while Mainoo is instead kept for the rebuild under Amorim.. New Fernandes role. Often during his time at United, Bruno Fernandes has been used in their attacking midfield role. That is a position that has helped Fernandes go and score and assist plenty of goals throughout his five-year stint at United to date.. However, Fernandes has been used in a more deeper position by Amorim in recent weeks. That has allowed him to pick up the ball from United’s centre-backs and dictate the play.. At this stage, it’s looking like Fernandes is going to be used there on a permanent basis as he suits the role better than Mainoo, who has been deployed further forward under Amorim..
