Bookmark. Manchester United legend Denis Law (Image: Getty Images). Denis Law, Manchester United legend and twice a player for Manchester City, has passed away at the age of 84.. The Scotland international was a British-record signing for both clubs at different points of the 1960s. It was at Old Trafford he would help win the greatest of trophies football has to offer whilst scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances.. On the day of his passing he remains immortalised at the home of Man United with two statues, the Holy Trinity tribute also featuring George Best and Bobby Charlton outside the stadium and another inside the Stretford End.. A statement released on behalf of the Law family said: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.. “We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”. Here, MEN Sport pays tribute to Law with a look back through the very best times of his illustrious career.. Beginnings at Huddersfield Town. Law’s career was kickstarted at Huddersfield Town under future Liverpool manager Bill Shankly. His debut came on Christmas Ever, 1956, in a 2-1 win vs Notts County. Here he would first gain recognition from Matt Busby at Man United whilst Shankly would also hope to take him to Anfield one day, but it turned out both were unsuccessful… (Image: Daily Mirror)1 of 8. Man City move. The first transfer of Law’s career was to Man City in 1960 for a then-British record fee estimated to be £55,000. Perhaps his best day in his first stint with the club was also the most bizarre – a 1961 FA Cup tie vs Luton Town. He scored six goals only for the match to be abandoned, none of them count in the history books and then the replay saw City lose 3-1. He enjoyed his spell at Maine Road but often in relegation fights he sought a greater challenge, eventually leaving for Torino. (Image: Daily Mirror/Mirrorpix/Mirrorpix via Getty Images)2 of 8. Finally a Man United player. Law spent one season in Italy playing alongside fellow Brit Joe Baker, who made the move from Hibernian. Again, his switch came with a record £110,000 fee for a British player. He was voted the best non-Italian in Serie A’s 1961/62 campaign but sought a move away. Torino were adamant to sell to Juventus, though Law and Busby got their wish years in the making in the end and on July 10, 1962, he was officially unveiled as a Man United player for a third British record fee of £115,000. Over the next 16 years he would become a legend for his country, making 55 total appearances with 30 goals scored. To this day that stands as a joint-record alongside Kenny Dalglish as the most strikes for the Tartan Army. Here, he is pictured facing England in 1967.
