Moyes was unhappy with the penalty decision.(Image: Redmen TV 2). David Moyes couldn’t understand why Everton’s late penalty against Manchester United was overturned on Saturday afternoon.. United showed character to come back from 2-0 down at Goodison Park, scoring twice in the second half thanks to brilliant goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.. However, United almost ruined all of their good work during injury time when the referee, Andy Madley, pointed to the spot after Ashley Young went down in the penalty area.. Matthijs de Ligt appeared to pull Young’s shirt, but the penalty was overturned after a VAR check, and Moyes said he couldn’t understand why the referee didn’t stick by his initial decision.. “I am hugely pleased we got a point because it is another point towards safety. I am disappointed we didn’t take all three. We played here and drew 2-2 against Liverpool and it felt like a win,” said Moyes.. “Today’s 2-2 felt not like a defeat but close to it. We played really well. A free kick changes the momentum. I don’t think Manchester United caused us too much problems until that.”. Moyes added about the penalty decision: “I can’t understand why the referee onfield makes the decision, if it was clear and obvious he should go to the screen, I didn’t see that, he pulls his jersey. I thought the referee made the correct decision at the time and he should stick with it.. “I think everybody who watches football we are all looking forward to a referee saying ‘no I am sticking to what I have done’. They are being told they are absolutely wrong.. “If it was absolutely clear and obvious, that is what we have got VAR for. I think I have been the opposition manager I would be saying there is a pull on the jersey, this could be close. I don’t really know who you would blame.”. Moyes was informed the Premier League had confirmed VAR looked at Maguire’s challenge on Young, not the shirt pull by De Ligt, and was surprised. “So did they look at the shirt pull? So they only mentioned the bit they needed to. It looked to me as though the shirt pull was enough,” he said.. “I can only tell you what I have seen. I didn’t know what you just told me. You shouldn’t be getting away with pulling jerseys. From the touchlines I thought he had gone over someone’s leg.”. Article continues below. The Premier League’s statement said: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.”
