Manchester United £133m transfer truth laid bare as Ruben Amorim rebuild hits familiar problem

Manchester United completed the January transfer window with the signings of defenders Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, but not the attackin reinforcements Ruben Amorim’s squad needs. It was a start to the new manager’s revolution, which is going to take patience if it is going to work.. The club bided their time before confirming any business that took place over the winter, as it was apparent outgoings were going to be critical in any additions made. In came full-back Dorgu from US Lecce for an initial €30m (£25m), rising by €5m (£4m) with add-ons and alongside him young talent Heaven from Arsenal at the cost of a compensatory package. Outgoing in the defensive department was Tyrell Malacia, joining PSV Eindhoven on a temporary basis.. Surplus to requirements, fellow stars Marcus Rashford and Antony exited on loan to free up funds through wages and importantly space within the squad. Yet, Man United did not seal any incoming attackers before 11pm on February 3.. If anything, it would have been more departures at the top of the agenda. Alejandro Garnacho, as much as he has been Amorim’s saviour plenty of times these past months, has been at the forefront of January talk with Napoli failing in their attempt to sign him. Chelsea then became frontrunners for his signature before reports also claimed Tottenham Hotspur had entered the running to seal a transfer.. All three clubs, and the rest for that matter, not only know how talented the 20-year-old is but also the truth of the financial difficulty Old Trafford chiefs are in. That is only reflected in the unveiling of Football Observatory’s latest financial standings – only three clubs globally have a larger negative net spend during the 2024/25 campaign.. They are Brighton, Ipswich Town and Al-Nassr, with Man United’s total an astounding -€160m (£133m) for the season. Of course, last summer’s dealings under Erik ten Hag to bring Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte and Noussair Mazraoui account for the majority of this negative total, but has been the exact problem over 12 years at Man United.. Manager after manager at Old Trafford has been handed the funds to oversee a shopping haul of their wishes and it has created an amalgamation of individuals in the team.. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have made steps to eat away at the budget with job cuts and ticket price hikes, highly controversially as that is, whilst loan exits are only a stop-gap between now and the end of the season.. But the summer is going to have to show true change at Man United if they are going to escape this transfer quandary they find themselves in at the start of Amorim’s reign. Only then once the books are balanced can he begin his task of taking the club back to the pinnacle.. Get United transfer news and updates on WhatsApp!.
