‘My dad went to watch his beloved Manchester United and never came home’

The heartbroken family of a Manchester United supporter who passed away after collapsing while heading to a game have honored the lifelong fan with a heartfelt tribute. Alfred Pomfret, 87, held a season ticket in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford. He went to every home game with his son Graeme, 63. They were entering the Europa League match against Glasgow Rangers on Thursday, January 23, when Alfred suddenly collapsed due to a cardiac arrest in the parking lot just outside the stadium. Police officers and paramedics quickly responded and performed CPR. He was transported to the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), but they were unable to save him. His family reported that the coroner’s office attributed his death to a heart condition, categorizing it as ‘natural causes.’ Both Graeme and Alf’s wife of 67 years, Josie, have now honored the memory of the devoted father and husband. Alfred was an electrical engineer at the General Post Office (GPO) in Manchester. During his retirement, Alf frequently assisted at the Shrewsbury Street Bakery in his hometown of Glossop, which was managed by Graeme. He was a frequent visitor to the Partington Theatre in Glossop and had a passion for wildlife, holding a lifetime membership with the Wildlife Trust alongside Josie and participating in regular meetings.
