‘It’s up to him’ – Denmark boss makes Patrick Dorgu admission after Manchester United transfer

Denmark’s coach Brian Riemer has cautioned Patrick Dorgu that he will need to meet a higher level of expectations now that he has signed with Manchester United. The 20-year-old finalized a five-and-a-half-year contract with United on Sunday, after arriving from Italy and successfully completing a medical on Saturday. United aimed to secure a left-sided wing-back ahead of the January transfer window and saw Dorgu as a good match for head coach Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. His recent progress in Italy, combined with his speed and physicality, suggests he is likely to become the top choice for the left wing-back position at United. Riemer, responsible for guiding Dorgu’s growth on the international level, has cautioned him about facing new and intense expectations and pressures he hasn’t encountered before. “It speaks volumes about Danish talent development that two of our standout players, Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu, are at what may be the best club in the world,” Riemer said to Tipsbladet. “Patrick needs to understand that transitioning from Lecce to Manchester United brings a whole new set of expectations and pressures.” He has given a lot of thought to that along with his supporters. “If he is successful, the reward is significantly higher, as he will then be in a leading position.” He has numerous chances to advance significantly in his career, but it’s ultimately his responsibility to act on those opportunities. Dorgu, who completed his first-team debut for Denmark last September, has played once for his national team since Riemer took over as the new manager in November. He left the bench during the final moments of a 2-1 loss to Spain in the Nations League. Denmark’s next matches are in March, when they will play Portugal twice in a two-legged Nations League quarter-final. So far, Dorgu has only started one match for his national team at the senior level.
