Manchester United meet Jorge Mendes over possible Geovany Quenda transfer

Manchester United has had discussions with Jorge Mendes regarding the possible acquisition of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda. Mendes’s Gestifute agency is negotiating on behalf of Quenda’s agent, Igor Campedelli, who represents the 17-year-old player. United have been monitoring Quenda since he debuted for Sporting in August. According to another source, Mendes has acquired fifty percent of Quenda’s image rights. United has yet to submit a formal bid for Quenda, but people at Sporting anticipate that the club will pursue the Portuguese international next year. Mendes has had a longstanding connection with United since Cristiano Ronaldo’s initial time at the club in the 2000s. Mendes was David de Gea’s agent for most of his 12 years at United, played a key role in bringing Bruno Fernandes to the club in 2020, and managed Ronaldo’s return to United in 2021. United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward embraced Mendes when he spotted him in the directors’ box prior to Ronaldo’s second debut against Newcastle United. Additionally, Paris Saint-Germain has shown interest in Quenda. PSG has shifted their recruitment approach to prioritize younger players who have the potential to become superstars. Manchester City, Liverpool, and RB Leipzig have also shown interest in Quenda. Mendes plans to meet with more clubs in the upcoming weeks to find the best option for Quenda, who now appears likely to leave Sporting next year. Although Quenda’s contract with Sporting runs until 2027, he has gained attention since the Manchester Evening News reported on Manchester United’s interest earlier this month. He played an important role in Sporting’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League three weeks ago and was included on the bench for Portugal’s Nations League draw against Croatia last week. Originally from Guinea-Bissau, Quenda has made just 20 appearances for Sporting, and Portuguese media have compared his talent and work ethic to that of Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka. He joined Sporting’s academy from Benfica at the age of 12 and was selected for the matchday squad by Ruben Amorim as a 16-year-old last year. Last month, he became the club’s youngest league scorer against Famalicão, breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record and is also the youngest player from Sporting to start a Champions League match.
