The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning as heavy rain is set to lash parts of the UK early next week.

The forecaster said the worst of the weather will be in south Wales between late Sunday and Monday night, with 60-80mm of rainfall seen in some areas, and flooding likely.

It follows several yellow weather warnings over the weekend as rain and ice are expected to hit areas in East Midlands, North East England, North West England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber.

The weather agency has warned that heavy rain could lead to potential flooding and disruption over the weekend, with rainfall of up to 50 to 60 mm and strong winds possible.

Following heavy rain on Saturday, the forecaster is expecting surface temperatures to fall widely below freezing on Sunday, warning that wet and icy roads could lead to dangerous travelling conditions.

Monday’s amber weather warning will come in at midnight on Monday and remain in place for 24 hours. Around 60 to 80mm of rain is expected to accumulate, reaching 100 to 120 mm in some areas.
