But as is often the case, all good things must come to an end. The Netflix show is ready to return for it’s fifth and final series, bringing the story of Stranger Things to a close.

Of course, this means waving goodbye to the characters we’ve grown to know and love over their nine year fight to save Hawkins – including Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke).

For Maya, joining the cast of Stranger Things in season three was a moment that catapulted her to new heights of stardom. Introduced as Steve Harrington’s Scoops Ahoy co-worker, Maya’s appearance as the fiercely witty Robin Buckley saw her become an instant fan favourite among loyal viewers. Of course, Robin is just as important to Maya, too. Opening up last year about the character, she explained, ‘I’ve learned so much from her. I’ve put so much of myself into her.’

Who is Maya Hawke?

Maya Hawke is an American actor, best known for appearing in Stranger Things as the role of Robin Buckley. Alongside acting, Maya is also a model and a singer/songwriter. She’s modelled for brands including Calvin Klein and All Saints, and released albums including 2020’s Blush and 2024’s Chaos Angel.

While she’s certainly made her own mark in the world of film, Maya hasn’t shied away from her nepo baby status. The star is the oldest daughter of Hollywood royalty Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who met on the set of Gattaca in 1997. The couple tied the knot in May 1998 and were married for seven years before divorcing in 2005, when Maya was five years old.

The Stranger Things star has been open about her famous family in the past, previously telling British Vogue, ‘I’m not interested in hiding from the fact my parents are actors. I’m proud of them!’

Speaking to Variety, Maya also touched on the idea that nepo babies don’t always ‘deserve’ the roles they’re given. Alongside Maya, Uma and Ethan share a son named Levon, 23, who is also an actor. Maya also has half sisters named Clementine, 17, and Indiana, 14, who Ethan welcomed with his second wife Ryan, as well as a half-sister named Luna, 13, who Uma shares with her former fiance Arpad Busson. Creativity clearly runs in the family, with Maya also the great-great-grandniece of playwright Tennessee Williams.

Previously opening up about her family dynamic, Maya explained, ‘We’re a close-knit complicated family, but we spend a lot of time together, even though we live in different houses. We’re a rambunctious gang!’

What does Maya Hawke do? Her acting career explained

Although it was her Stranger Things debut in 2019 that saw her become a household name, Maya’s career began long before.

While studying acting at New York’s prestigious Juilliard School in 2017, Maya was offered the part of Jo March in the BBC miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. The role was a welcome win for Maya, who had previously missed out on playing the lead role in Universal Picture’s live-adaptation of The Little Mermaid. While director Sofia Coppola pushed for Maya to play the part of Ariel, the producers chose the better-known Chloë Grace Moretz. Chloë later stepped away from the role in 2016, and the film was never made.

Maya then made her film debut in 2018’s Ladyworld, before appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as the role of Flower Child, a follower of Charles Manson. Since then, she’s starred in Fear Street Part One: 1994 (2021), Do Revenge (2022), her father’s film Wildcat (2023), and Inside Out 2 (2024).

As for her next big project, Maya is set to appear in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise. A prequel to the hit movies, Maya will play the character of Wiress.

Earlier this year, Maya hit headlines after opening up about the reality of being an actor in 2025. Saying the line between actor and celebrity had become ‘extremely blurry,’ she explained, ‘I’ve talked to so many smart directors about how I’m gonna delete my Instagram, and they’re like, “Just so you know, when I’m casting a movie with some producers, they hand me a sheet with the amount of collective followers I have to get of the cast that I can. So if you delete your Instagram and I lose those followers, understand that these are the kinds of people that I need to cast around you.”

When did Maya Hawke join Stranger Things?

Maya joined the world of Stranger Things back in 2019, with Robin Buckley introduced as a new character for series three. Fans first met Robin at the Starcourt Mall shopping centre, where she worked in the ice cream parlour alongside Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington.

According to reports, Robin was an in-demand role. Nicola Coughlin had also auditioned to play the role, later saying, ‘[Maya] was far better than I ever would have been.’ The following year, Nicole landed her role as Penelope Featherington in Netflix’s Bridgerton.

Does Robin Buckley die in Stranger Things 5?

At the end of season four, Robin was alive and well, preparing for the final battle. Season 5 will arrive any day now, with Volume One dropping on 27 November at 1am in the UK, and Volume Two set to hit UK Netflix at 1am on Boxing Day (26 December.)

Of course, it will be the show’s last ever season, meaning there’s bound to be at least one shock death. For Maya, she’s hoping it’s her.

Opening up to Variety in 2022, she explained, ‘It’s the last season, so people are probably gonna die. I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. I’d love to die with honor, as any actor would.’

But if Robin does make it out of Hawkins, Maya’s not turning down the idea of reprising the role somewhere down the line. ‘Normally I wouldn’t really be a proponent of a spinoff,’ she shared, ‘but if I got to do it with Joe Keery, I would do anything. He’s so funny and wonderful and smart, and he’s got great boundaries. He’s an excellent coworker and I would do anything with him.’

Is Maya Hawke single?

No, she’s not! Maya is currently in a relationship with singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson, 35. The pair have been together for the last four years, with Christian working with Maya on some of her music.

It’s the best. They know you, and as a human being who has dated other people. They really know you as a person who has feelings… Not just a piece of paper for them to project their image of a perfect girlfriend onto.’
