President Donald Trump unveiled a new nickname for California Governor Gavin Newsom as Republicans in the state sued, hours after voters overwhelmingly approved a redistricting measure.
“Maybe that should be his nickname, slimy. Slimy Newscum, right?” the president asked the crowd at the America Business Forum in Miami Wednesday.
In response, Newsom wrote on X: âYou lost.â
Also on Wednesday, Newsom and California Secretary of State Shirley Weber were named in a lawsuit brought by state Republicans, after voters on Tuesday approved Prop 50, allowing the state to redraw congressional district boundaries. The latest redistricting battle could prove critical in determining which party wins control of the House in the 2026 midterms.
The suit alleges the state legislature violated the Constitution âwhen it drew new congressional district lines based on race, specifically to favor Hispanic voters, without cause or evidence to justify it.â
The plaintiffs are represented by the law firm founded by Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at DOJ. She no longer works at the firm.
âWe havenât reviewed the lawsuit, but if itâs from the California Republican Party and Harmeet Dhillonâs law firm, itâs going to fail,â Newsom said on X. âGood luck, losers.â
Recap: A huge night for Democrats and a dismal performance by Republicans

The evening of November 4 was a dismal night for Republicans and a jubilant one for Democrats, as the GOP was defeated in four major votes.
Zohran Mamdani swept to victory to become NYCâs new mayor, after running on a campaign focused on making the city more affordable by raising corporation tax.
The self-described âTrumpâs worst nightmareâ won 50.4 percent of the vote, according to CBS News, while independent Andrew Cuomo won 41.6 percent and Republican Curtis Sliwa took home 7 percent. Mamdani is the first person to receive over a million votes since 1969.
Meanwhile, Democrats won two gubernatorial races – one in Virginia and one in New Jersey.
Democratic congresswoman Abigail Spanberger became the first woman elected as Virginiaâs governor when she defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
And Mikie Sherrill thrashed Jack Ciattarelli at the ballot box in New Jersey.
A vote in California also ended in great results for the Democrats. Voters gave the green light to Proposition 50, which will allow the state to redraw its congressional maps to favor Democrats, as Republicans have in Texas.
Scott Bessent says SCOTUS hearing on tariffs went ‘very well’
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters the Supreme Court hearing Wednesday on President Donald Trumpâs sweeping tariffs went âvery well.â
The Court is weighing whether the Trump administrationâs use of a 1977 emergency law to impose tariffs without Congressional approval is lawful.
âIt went very well. I think the Solicitor General has made a very powerful case,â Bessent said.
When asked what the Trump administration would do if the Court rules against them, Bessent said, âWeâre not going to discuss that now.â
Hereâs more on the case from Mark Sherman:
FAA cuts airline traffic in 40 markets over shutdown as Americans already face uncertainty over holiday travel plans
The Federal Aviation Administration has said it will be reducing air traffic by 10 percent across 40 airports beginning Friday amid the ongoing government shutdown.
Transport Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that the action would be taken to at âhigh-volumeâ airports in order to maintain safety.
Duffy said the agency was confronting staffing shortages caused by air traffic controllers, who are working unpaid, with some calling out of work during the shutdown, resulting in delays across the country.
âWe do not want to see disruptions at the FAA or here at DOT. We don’t want that, but our number one priority is to make sure when you travel you travel safely,â he told reporters.

Billionaire congratulates Mamdani after donating more than $1m to stop him from winning
Bill Ackman, a hedge fund manager and Trump supporter who donated to PACs aimed at defeating Zohran Mamdani, offered the Democratic socialist an olive branch.
After Mamdani clinched the New York City mayoral race, beating GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, Ackman congratulated him.
âNow you have a big responsibility. If I can help NYC, just let me know what I can do,â the billionaire wrote in a social media post Tuesday night.
In a follow-up post Wednesday, Ackman acknowledged that some people were âsurprisedâ by his comments to Mamdani after he poured more than $1 million in donations into pro-Cuomo and anti-Mamdani super PACs.
âSome have been surprised by my conciliatory post to Mamdani. Mamdani won a decisive election. He is going to be our mayor for the next four years. I care enormously about New York City which has been very good to me and my family since we emigrated to NYC in the 1890s,â he wrote.
âWhile I did not support Mamdani for mayor and have concerns about the unintended and negative consequences of his policies, I want to do everything I can to help NYC regardless of who are mayor is.â
Florida sheriff invites NYC residents and NYPD officers to move after Mamdaniâs win
A Florida sheriff has invited NYPD officers and New York residents to abandon the city and move down south, following Zohran Mamdaniâs mayoral election victory.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood wrote in a Facebook post shortly after Mamdaniâs win that anyone unhappy with the results of the election, would be welcome to move 1,000 miles to his county, between Orlando and Jacksonville.
âLet me be the first to invite you into the welcoming arms of Volusia County, FL,â he posted.
In particular, he addressed his âNYPD friendsâ writing: âIf you want to come to work in an organization that is cutting edge, innovating every day, a place where youâre appreciated by the community and supported by the elected officials, then check out the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and take a look at how weâre getting the job done.â

Trump, who for some time now has referred to the Golden State chief executive by mispronouncing his name as “Newscum,” was ranting about a long-delayed and infamous California high-speed rail project when he described Newsom as a “slimy one.”
“Maybe that should be his nickname, slimy. Slimy Newscum, right?”
