A Capitol rioter pardoned by President Donald Trump was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, according to a report.
Christopher Moynihan, 34, was arrested Sunday after texting that he planned to âeliminateâ Jeffries as he spoke at the Economic Club of New York Monday, according to court documents obtained by CBS News.
Moynihan allegedly wrote, âHakeem Jeffries makes a speech in a few days in NYC I cannot allow this terrorist to live,â New York state prosecutors said in the court filing.
He is also accused of writing: âEven if I am hated, he must be eliminated, I will kill him for the future,â according to the filing.
Moynihan is one of the over 1,500 supporters of Trump charged with crimes connected to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol building. He was found guilty in August 2022 of obstructing an official proceeding, pleading guilty to five misdemeanor charges. He was sentenced in February 2023 to 21 months in prison.
Prosecutors described Moynihan as one of the first Trump supporters to breach police barricades and enter the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He was also among a smaller group who were on the Senate floor during the insurrection.
Moynihan now faces a felony charge of making a terroristic threat, prosecutors said.
He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the case Thursday in Dutchess County, New York State Police said.
His father declined to comment to CBS Monday, and said his son had not yet been appointed a defense attorney.
