When Jennifer Lawrence stepped out at Cannes earlier this year, her first red carpet in two years, we were reminded just how much we’d missed her unique star power. Having taken time out of the spotlight as she welcomed her second child with husband Cooke Maroney, Lawrence, 35, is now busy promoting her new film and passion project, Die, My Love, an intense psychological thriller exploring postpartum depression.
Lawrence is both an executive producer on the film, under her production company Excellent Cadaver, and stars in the lead role. In cinemas this November, Die, My Love is about a woman, Grace, who slowly unravels while confronting the contradictions of love, lust, motherhood and madness,’ Lawrence explains. Robert Pattinson co-stars as Grace’s husband, with the legendary Sissy Spacek as her mother.
Based on an Argentinian novel of the same name, Martin Scorsese sent the book to Lawrence’s production company after reading it in his book club, suggesting it was ripe for an adaptation starring Lawrence. And they did just that. ‘My producing partner [ Justine Polsky] and I brought this film to life,’ says Lawrence, ‘and I’m so looking forward to the world seeing it’.
Under the direction of Lynne Ramsay – who directed Tilda Swinton in the 2011 adaptation of We Need To Talk About Kevin – early reviews have lauded Lawrence’s ‘fear- less’ performance. There’s already Oscar buzz, which could see Lawrence take home her second Best Actress award, following her 2013 win for Silver Linings Playbook.
As well as actor and producer, Lawrence has the impressive title ‘ambassador of elegance’, for luxury watch brand Longines, on her CV. Elegance, to Lawrence, ‘is effortless and simple. I prefer understated elegance. I think a watch gives you a more polished, professional look and it is also something really beautiful. When I got married, my brother-in-law gave me a watch that his father had given him when he was younger, which was such a meaningful gesture.’
How does Lawrence approach her everyday style? ‘I feel most elegant when I can get ready quickly.’ The juggle of work and family life – even for a Hollywood A-lister like her – is real, and it’s clear that with a three-year-old and six-month-old, time has become the ultimate luxury.
‘Time is so precious. I like to appreciate every moment and be present because time moves so quickly,’ she says. ‘My favourite time of day is in the morning, between 7 and 8am, when my husband and I can be together for coffee and I’m getting my family up and moving for the day. The older I get, the more I realise that how I feel when I’m doing something is important. A good day starts with my mindset. The best way to spend your time is being appreciative for whatever it is you are doing. Appreciating the small everyday pleasures in life.’
