Captain Leah Williamson has urged her England team-mates to prove they are no “flash in the pan” as they take on the world champions in Basel.

The Lionesses transformed women’s football in England when they lifted their first major trophy at their home European Championship in 2022 and they now hope to become the nation’s first senior football side to win one away from home.

Standing in their way are a formidable Spanish team who beat them in the 2023 World Cup final.

Williamson said: “You don’t just want to be sort of a flash in the pan, like a memory and I think that when we spoke before 2022, we said it was the start of something.

“We recognise the opportunity and we will do everything we can to take it.”

Gunners land Gyokeres

Arsenal have finally solved their striker conundrum by completing the £55million signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon.

The 27-year-old Sweden international, who fired Sporting to the title last season with 39 goals and netted a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, is understood to have signed a five-year deal at the Emirates.

Gyokeres’ transfer, which could end up costing the north London club as much as £64million with performance-related add-ons, takes Arsenal’s close-season spending close to £200million.

Manager Arteta said: “We’re excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to starting working with him.”

Gibbs-White snubs Spurs

Morgan Gibbs-White has dashed Tottenham’s hopes of signing him by committing to a new “record” contract at Nottingham Forest.

It represents a remarkable turnaround from earlier this month when Spurs were thought to have triggered the £60million release clause in the 25-year-old’s previous deal at the City Ground.

However, a potential move stalled as Forest threatened legal action over an alleged illegal approach for the player.

After weeks of uncertainty, Gibbs-White now appears to have been convinced by the ambition of Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and has agreed to stay on improved terms.

The club posted on X: “A statement of intent from our owner Evangelos Marinakis, as Morgan Gibbs-White signs a record deal at the club until the summer of 2028.”

Diaz future unclear

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot left Luis Diaz out of his side’s 4-2 friendly defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong due to ongoing speculation about his future.

Bayern Munich are understood to have reopened dialogue with the Premier League champions over the Colombian, having had an initial offer of £59million dismissed last week.

“In Lucho’s (Diaz’s) situation, there’s a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that,” said Slot.
