On Friday, July 18, Debbie Neagle, 35, and Tafadzwa Chinhoyi, 40, both of no fixed address, entered the Co-op store in Oldfield Place and carried out a planned theft.
After splitting up inside the shop, Neagle made her way to the meat aisle and began filling a rucksack, while Chinhoyi picked up a basket and plastic bags.
The pair then regrouped and stole energy drinks, toiletries, cleaning supplies and laundry products.
Neagle successfully left the store with her stolen goods, but Chinhoyi was challenged by staff as he attempted to leave with two bags of items.
Police were called, and neighbourhood officers quickly responded, tracking down both suspects and arresting them.
They were later charged with theft and pleaded guilty at their first appearance before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, July 19.
Neagle was sentenced to 112 days in prison, while Chinhoyi received 70 days. Both were ordered to compensate the victim.
Inspector Lee Cheesman said: “Our local officers are on patrol in the town centres and are quick to respond to reports of crime.
“Where shoplifting has been committed, they generally know those responsible and will track them down at the earliest opportunity.
“Persistent offenders can expect to be charged and will swiftly appear before magistrates to answer for their crimes.”
