The building at 71 Southwood Road, New Eltham, was previously used as a Conservative Club.

But new owners – New Eltham Indian Cultural Club – have now taken over the site after it was sold by the private members’ club.

According to a planning application to change the use of the building, the sale took place as “membership and attendance numbers dwindled” at the Conservative Club after the covid pandemic.

Architect firm SKM, which submitted the plans on the owner’s behalf, say that the building is “in need of significant refurbishment”.

Proposals include constructing a two-storey extension behind the main building.

The owners claim this would allow for an “improved” public hall, gallery space, kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor, classroom facilities on the first floor and living area or office on the second floor.

Planning documents say: “The addition of a gallery, public hall, dining spaces, classrooms, offices, and improved amenities supports cultural engagement, community cohesion, and local access to education and services.

“The retention of the upper-floor apartment ensures on-site oversight, enhancing safety and operational sustainability.”

The planning application, submitted last month, is currently being considered by Greenwich Council.
