Sunday will see Pep Guardiola’s side host Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium in the top flight, as they aim to return to winning ways after a disappointing defeat in midweek. City were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the Champions League to lose 6-3 on aggregate and exit the tournament before the last-16 stage.. In the Premier League, though, City last ran out 4-0 winners over Newcastle United and will be looking to record a similar result when they face league leaders Liverpool this weekend. Injuries have had a major impact on clubs across the top flight this season, with City and Liverpool being no different.. For the Merseyside club, they are guaranteed to be without Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley for the clash against City. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot confirmed on Thursday that Gomez has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury, while Bradley picked up an injury in their draw with Aston Villa on Wednesday night.. Cody Gakpo has missed the last two matches for Liverpool with an ankle injury. Slot stated that it would be a “close call” when asked if the Netherlands international would be available to face City on Sunday.. Guardiola is also being forced to deal with some injury concerns going into the clash against Liverpool. Rodri, Oscar Bobb and Manuel Akanji all missed the defeat to Madrid on Wednesday night, while John Stones was withdrawn in the opening minutes with a potential injury.. There were also concerns about Erling Haaland’s fitness during the trip to the Spanish capital. Haaland was left on the bench by Guardiola for the game after suffering a knee injury in the win over Newcastle last week.. “Not close enough,” said Guardiola before kick-off against Madrid. “Trained a little bit yesterday but spoke this morning and said he [Haaland] doesn’t feel good, so we choose another one.. Article continues below. “Of course, Erling is massively important for us, not necessary to be a manager to realise. But it is what it is. During this season, has been many cases [of injury], it could not be different for this important game.”. Manchester City wrapped up the 2023/24 season with a fourth successive Premier League title, but they missed out on another Treble with defeat in the FA Cup final and Champions League quarter-finals. It’s now time for Pep Guardiola and co to turn their attention to the transfer window..
