Darts legend Phil Taylor says Luke Littler must overcome ‘Man United’ syndrome

Darts legend Phil Taylor has shown his backing for Luke Littler to exceed his record of 16 world titles, but cautioned that reaching this goal will face difficulties similar to the ‘Manchester United syndrome.’ Earlier this month, Littler made history as the youngest player to win the World Championship at Alexandra Palace, marking an exceptional first year. After his first win, Littler thought he might surpass Taylor’s record if he stays driven for success in the coming years. “If I desire it, then I should achieve it,” Littler shared with Sky Sports. “However, it will take many years to accumulate the same number of trophies as Michael [van Gerwen] and Phil Taylor.” The darts legend has now replied to Littler and shared his guidance for the 17-year-old. “If he aims to surpass my world record, he is free to try,” Taylor told the PA news agency. “It will be challenging; to secure 16 titles, you’ll need to reach many finals. That’s a lot of darts, numerous hotels, and a lot of traveling.” He would need to play for the next 20 years to approach my record, and during that time, he must stay committed and ensure that he does everything correctly. He also commented on the challenges of achieving early success and how competitors raise their performance in reaction. It’s challenging to be young and have money saved.
